“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.”
2 Timothy 3:16
Wow, what a powerful Bible Verse right?
On my previous post, I shared some tips on “How to Read the Bible Consistently and Make It a Habit.” This post is the second part of the two-part series on establishing your Bible reading routine.
Today I would like to share with you a practice that I’ve been doing since I started my daily quiet time. It’s a habit that truly helped me so much in my daily devotion and made me more excited reading God’s Word. And that is…
“Scripture Writing”
Scripture writing is simply writing out Bible Verses by hand and reflecting on the words as you write. It is a powerful way to absorb God’s word by manually writing it to help us remember it.
By writing down Scriptures by hand, it helps us to slow down and focus on the Word of God and at the same time reflect on it. It helps fight quick, surface-level reading where retention is really low. It also gives us the opportunity to pause and really think about God’s word and how we can apply it into our life.
This, in turn, increases our understanding of God’s Word and allows Him the space and time to really speak into our lives.
How do we really do Scripture Writing?
Scripture writing routine can be as quick and easy or elaborate as you would like it to be. This post, however, is a beginner’s guide to Scripture Writing.
Time to Gather Your Warrior Supplies
First, we need to prepare our tools. One good thing about Scripture Writing is most of the tools you need are already around you.
You need:
notebook or journal
pen
and of course, your Bible
(optional: Scripture Writing Plan of choice)
The process is actually really simple. I like to incorporate Scripture Writing into my Daily Quiet Time with God and Bible reading.
Here are my simple tips for you:
1. Intentionally Seek What You Are Going to Write
Begin your Scripture Writing with a prayer. Ask God for wisdom to lead you to the Bible verse that will open your eyes and draw you closer to Him. Pray also for guidance on how you can apply the Scripture to your life.
By asking God’s guidance, you are preparing your heart to be prepared to receive the message He has for you that day. It shows your willingness to listen and reflect on what you are about to read, write and learn.
2. Begin Your Treasure Hunting in the Word
Next, you can research a word or topic in the Bible that you would like to focus on. Since I incorporate my Scripture Writing during my daily quiet time, I usually get my daily Scripture there.
What I do is to follow my Bible reading plan and read everything non-stop. I highlight different Bible verses that speak to me while reading. Afterwards, I look back on the highlighted Bible verses and choose one Scripture that really spoke to me the most that time.
You can also follow specific Scripture Writing plans and maybe do a series on a topic you want to cover. For instance, you can focus on Patience and then look for different Bible verses that are related to it.
There are so many free resources available online. But if you prefer to do it on your own, you can use a Topical Bible which is a wonderful resource tool that arranges the Scripture by topics.
3. Practice the Old School Way of Writing
Now, it’s time to write down the Scripture. Yes, that means writing it by hand. Copy the chosen Scripture and write it down on your journal or notebook. You can choose to write verses around a theme as you search for verses related to a specific word or concept.
You can allot a notebook just for Scripture writing alone. As you write, it helps you to focus more on the Word and reflect on it. You are able to engage with it further because you become an active participant now.
4. Go The Extra Mile, It’s Worth It!
Since I incorporate my Scripture Writing during my Bible reading time, it is easier to get a bigger picture of the context. I write the impact of the Bible verse on me and how I can apply it in the next coming days.
If you want to go more in-depth with your Scripture writing, you can reflect and ask yourself few questions like:
- What does this Scripture mean to me?
- How does this Scripture enhance my view of God?
- How can I apply this Scripture in my life?
- What attitude or value does this Scripture teach me?
- What promise or truth can I claim from it?
- What sin or error does it want me to avoid?
- What command or example does it want me to follow?
The more questions you have about the Scripture, the more you will get out of it.
The Spiritual Habit That Keeps On Giving
Scripture Writing isn’t really that difficult. It can take just a few moments of your day to sit and write out a verse. You may find different Scripture Writing plans online. But I find it really the best when it is incorporated in my daily Bible reading plan.
The most important thing is to make the commitment to write a portion of Scripture each and every day.
This practice really helped me fall in love with God’s Words even more. It is a very focused and peaceful activity for me that helps me get closer with Jesus. I feel like I get to know him in a more intimate way.
On the video linked above, I shared some of my Scripture Writing journals in the past. I encourage you to try it first for a few days and see how it can have a powerful impact in your spiritual life.
Once you commit to writing Scriptures, you’ll develop the enthusiasm to write for more. You’ll be able to reflect and meditate on the Word of God. You’ll have the chance to actively interact with what you are reading.
In turn, you’ll remember it more and be able to use insights and wisdom you gain when needs arise.
